Eighty tree roses are lovingly maintained by PGC members at the historic Faria House. Every month the garden is pruned, weeded, fertilized or treated as needed.
Pinole's City Hall planters provide city employees and community members with a peaceful place to enjoy the beauty of flowers. PGC members plant and maintain 10 planters at the front of the building and on the patio.
The Pinole Welcome Wall is at the 80 East Freeway onramp, and serves as a friendly entrance to our community. PGC members plant and maintain it on a monthly basis and decorate it for various holidays and Christmas.
PGC members work closely with senior citizen facilities to provide workshops on flower arranging. Members also provide bedside bouquets of fresh flowers to residents at Greenridge Care Center in El Sobrante, CA.
The Blue Star Marker is located at the entrance to 80 East from Pinole Valley Road. It commemorates those community members who have served in the Armed Forces. PGC Members maintain the memorial garden and decorate it with flags on national holidays.
Scholarships are awarded annually to assist those students choosing a career in agriculture or a horticultural interest.
PGC members assist local elementary schools to plan, execute and maintain garden spaces for childern to experience hands-on learning.
PGC takes an active role in renewing our national forests through the State of California’s Penny Pines project. For each $68.00 that we collect, a plantation of approximately 350 trees on a little less than an acre are planted. The native trees chosen are cedar, fir, redwood, oak and various pine varieties.
During the months from September - June, PGC hosts monthly lectures and workshops on a wide variety of gardening topics. Recent discussions included succulent gardens, California native plants, tea-making from garden herbs, photography, and flower arranging.
PGC members enjoy performing our award-winning interactive skit "A Tree Grows in Pinole" for local kindergartners. Classrooms also receive a book on nature, and each student receives an oak sapling and an acorn.
PGC invites the community to visit our Free Seed Collection hosted by the Pinole Library. There you can "checkout" a packet of your favorite seeds (plants, flowers or vegetables) and take them home to germinate and grow. When they have matured, harvested seeds are returned to the Free Seed Library to create super strains that are adapted to our area.
Pinole Garden Club invites you to join us. We have been active for over 65 years and are very proud of all that we have achieved. Our club is dedicated to creating and promoting a further interest in gardening, in plant life, pollinators and the appreciation of the natural beauty of California. We are service oriented and community minded. Some of our projects are: Maintaining the Welcome Wall for the City of Pinole, caring for the rose garden at the historic Faria House, performing our award winning skit “A Tree Grows in Pinole” for local kindergartners, providing and decorating the annual Christmas Tree and Candy Cane Guessing Contest at the Pinole Library, organizing a Front Yard Landscaping Contest, our Annual Spring Plant Sale, contributing to Penny Pines reforestation, and more.
Our biggest event of the year is our annual plant fundraising sale held the first Saturday in May at the Pinole Valley Community Church. Starting in September, PGC members propagate plants and germinate seeds and bulbs in preparation for this popular community event.
PGC members conduct several field trips each year. These visits provide educational opportunities for members to explore botanical gardens, nurseries, festivals and tours that expand our knowledge of gardening and plants.
PGC Members get together several times a year for Plant Talk Events. These gatherings can include visits to members gardens, celebrating holidays or workshops. They are always a fun social activity that everyone enjoys.
We always welcome new members, so join us at one of our monthly meetings to learn more about us.
